by admin477351

The foreign ministers of the Quad nations convened in New Delhi for a pivotal meeting aimed at bolstering collaboration within the Indo-Pacific region amidst escalating geopolitical tensions and economic instability linked to the conflict in West Asia. India’s external affairs minister S. Jaishankar hosted Australian foreign minister Penny Wong, Japanese foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and US secretary of state Marco Rubio for this significant gathering, marking the first meeting of Quad foreign ministers in nearly a year.

Central to their discussions was the reinvigoration of the Quad alliance and the advancement of cooperation on various fronts, including maritime security, economic resilience, critical minerals, infrastructure development, and disaster response. Prior to the main meeting, Jaishankar and Motegi engaged in bilateral talks, emphasizing economic security and the repercussions of the West Asia crisis on energy supplies and trade. Both nations reiterated the significance of maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific and ensuring safe maritime routes.

Motegi highlighted the ongoing major structural changes in the world due to shifting global power dynamics and increasing conflicts, asserting that India and Japan share a responsibility in shaping the future international order. Meanwhile, Australia underscored the Quad’s crucial role in sustaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Canberra emphasized that the partnership is increasingly vital in an unstable global environment.

Among the primary topics anticipated for discussion was the long-pending Quad Leaders’ Summit. India had intended to host the summit in the previous year; however, it was postponed when US President Donald Trump did not confirm his participation. The most recent Quad Leaders’ Summit took place in the United States in 2024, while the prior foreign ministers’ meeting occurred in Washington in July 2025.

Jaishankar has recently highlighted the commitment of the Quad nations, which he described as “maritime democracies,” to uphold international law, secure trade routes, and a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region. This meeting in New Delhi aims to provide fresh impetus to these shared goals amid an increasingly complex international landscape.
