In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations, Japan and India have committed to enhancing cooperation in the realms of security, economic resilience, and advanced technology. This development follows a meeting in New Delhi between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders emphasized their dedication to a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific, expressing concerns over economic coercion and activities in the East China Sea and South China Sea.
The two nations have agreed to fortify their supply chains, particularly in strategic areas such as semiconductors and critical minerals. This collaboration is expected to bolster economic ties and ensure stability in vital sectors. Furthermore, the partnership is set to expand military cooperation, including joint exercises, naval vessel maintenance, and the development of defense equipment. A “two-plus-two” meeting involving foreign and defense ministers from both countries is planned for later this year, underscoring the strategic importance of their alliance.
Economically, the partnership received a boost with Japanese and Indian companies signing 129 memorandums of understanding. These agreements, valued at approximately ¥2 trillion ($12.4 billion), cover investments in various sectors, notably semiconductors, artificial intelligence, automotive manufacturing, and advanced technologies. This marks a significant investment push aimed at fostering innovation and economic growth in both nations.
Additionally, Japan and India have agreed to enhance their collaboration in artificial intelligence. A notable goal of this initiative is to bring 500 Indian AI specialists to Japan by 2030, facilitating joint research and innovation. This move highlights the growing importance of emerging technologies in the bilateral relationship and the mutual benefits expected from such cooperation.
