The European Union has emphasized India’s role as one of its most significant strategic allies, underscoring the deepening collaboration in various sectors such as trade, technology, security, and connectivity. This partnership is geared towards finalizing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of the year, marking a pivotal step in their bilateral relations.
At the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly highlighted that the EU’s relationship with India transcends trade, encompassing technology, research, climate initiatives, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital collaboration. He noted that both India and the EU are actively enhancing their partnership to tackle shared global challenges while fostering sustainable economic growth.
The anticipated India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which has completed its negotiation phase, is slated for formal signing by December and may be implemented as early as next year. This agreement is part of a broader effort to enhance cooperation in vital areas such as defense, security, and emerging technologies, especially in light of evolving global economic and geopolitical dynamics.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin remarked on the adaptability of Europe and India to the shifting global landscape, as both entities pursue greater strategic autonomy without compromising their strong alliances. He underscored the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring secure global trade routes, advocating for intensified India-EU collaboration on maritime security and regional stability.
