India and Australia have sealed a significant uranium supply agreement aimed at bolstering their bilateral relationship and supporting India’s burgeoning nuclear energy sector for peaceful purposes. This new arrangement is set to streamline uranium exports from Australia to India, addressing previous delays that persisted despite a uranium trade pact established in 2014. The initiative is intended to aid India’s ambitions for expanding clean energy while ensuring the uranium is used solely for civilian nuclear power generation.
Following the agreement’s signing, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the deal as a crucial advancement in enhancing India’s nuclear energy capacity. He underlined the significance of India-Australia cooperation in promoting peace, stability, and a rules-based order, particularly emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation across the Indo-Pacific region.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remarked that the agreement would unlock new prospects for Australia’s resource sector, while simultaneously strengthening the economic and strategic ties between the two countries. He pointed to the substantial growth in the bilateral relationship in recent years, which has been supported by increased political engagement and expanding cooperation.
In addition to the uranium supply agreement, both leaders reiterated their commitment to deepening defense and security cooperation, agreeing to enhance consultations on developments impacting shared interests within the Indo-Pacific. Prime Minister Modi’s visit also includes an address to a large gathering of the Indian-Australian community, underscoring the strong people-to-people connections between the nations.
