Technological Advances Pose Economic Threat, Warns Bank of England Governor

In an urgent communication to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has highlighted the potential threats that advanced artificial intelligence systems pose to the global financial landscape. Bailey expressed concerns that as AI models become more sophisticated and autonomous, they could increase the risk of cyberattacks, potentially triggering a significant economic downturn. The rapid evolution of these technologies, he noted, requires vigilant oversight to prevent widespread disruption across interconnected financial markets.

Bailey, who also leads the Financial Stability Board, emphasized that many nations currently lack sufficient frameworks to manage the development and deployment of cutting-edge AI systems. He called for enhanced international collaboration to ensure these technologies are launched and utilized in a safe manner. The governor identified cyber risk as an immediate issue, cautioning that AI could accelerate the speed and impact of cyber threats, especially as financial systems grow increasingly dependent on concentrated technology providers and third-party services.

Another critical point Bailey raised is the vulnerability of financial markets due to high asset valuations and rising leverage in bond and equity sectors. He warned that the prevailing investor optimism surrounding AI advancements could lead to a severe market correction if expectations shift abruptly. This scenario poses a significant risk, given the potential for amplified effects of any major financial shock.

To address these concerns, Bailey urged financial authorities around the globe to take coordinated actions aimed at mitigating AI-related risks. Strengthening the resilience of the global financial system, he suggested, should be a collective priority to safeguard against the destabilizing potential of advanced AI technologies.
