The West Bengal government has unveiled a new initiative to bolster the restoration and maintenance of historic Rath Yatra chariots by providing ₹5 lakh each to 60 different committees throughout the state. This marks a significant development as it is the first instance of the state offering direct financial aid for the celebrated Rath Yatra festivities. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the critical need for this support, emphasizing that many of these traditional wooden chariots are centuries old and in dire need of refurbishment.
In conjunction with this financial assistance, the government has also planned an aerial floral tribute for the 30-kilometer Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district. Helicopters will be used to shower flower petals on the devotees participating in the pilgrimage, adding a unique element to the event. Furthermore, the state will establish Seva Kendras at 75 different fair locations. These centers will provide essential services to pilgrims, including medical aid, police assistance, and access to drinking water.
Looking toward the future, the West Bengal government intends to extend its financial support to a greater number of Rath Yatra committees. This expansion aligns with a broader commitment to enhancing religious tourism and preserving cultural heritage in the region. The government has also announced a substantial investment of ₹1,000 crore over the next three years dedicated to the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This initiative aims to promote pilgrimage, restore historic temples, and stimulate economic growth through religious tourism.
