Veteran actor Nana Patekar, renowned for his intense performances and distinctive contributions to Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. His career, which spanned nearly five decades, was marked by a unique ability to portray complex characters, challenging the traditional notions of a Bollywood hero.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, Patekar began his film career with the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman” and gained recognition with “Aaj Ki Awaz” in 1984. He established his reputation with “Ankush” in 1986, known for his emotionally intense and unconventional roles. His noteworthy performance in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” and the acclaimed “Parinda,” which earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, cemented his place in the industry.

Breaking away from supporting roles, Patekar became a leading figure in mainstream Hindi cinema with films like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer.” The latter won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. In 1991, he made his directorial debut with “Prahaar,” a film that later garnered a dedicated following.

Patekar’s versatility extended beyond serious dramas, as shown in his comedic role as Uday Shetty in “Welcome” (2007), displaying his exceptional comic timing. He also appeared in a variety of films including “Bluffmaster!,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Ab Tak Chhappan,” and “Rajneeti,” as well as the Marathi film “Natsamrat.”

His career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta accused him of sexual harassment during the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and the Mumbai police filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. This controversy became part of the broader #MeToo movement in India.

Despite personal and professional challenges, Patekar’s legacy in both Hindi and Marathi cinema is marked by his distinctive acting style and commitment to a wide range of roles. His work has influenced generations of performers, securing his place among India’s most iconic actors.
