India and Switzerland Enhance Trade and Technology Ties with Five Agreements

by admin477351

India and Switzerland have taken significant steps to bolster their bilateral relations by signing five key agreements, focusing on areas such as trade, mobility, and technology cooperation. This development follows a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, during which they discussed strategies to expand collaboration in sectors including defence, nuclear energy, and investment.

The agreements are designed to enhance migration and mobility, promote the exchange of young professionals, and facilitate advancements in transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. Notably, the migration and mobility partnership aims to combat irregular migration and human trafficking, while also providing for multiple-entry visas and renewable permits for students. The young professionals agreement will allow up to 300 individuals from each country to gain professional and language experience through temporary employment opportunities each year.

In addition to these initiatives, the two nations are set to explore further cooperation in military exchanges, defence production, and nuclear energy. Collaborative efforts are also planned in the fields of health, clean energy, and space through joint research projects. Both countries are keen to enhance cooperation in transportation technologies and sustainable infrastructure, with a focus on electric vehicles and mobility systems.

These agreements are expected to improve market access for Indian exports, particularly in sectors like agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. Swiss companies are encouraged to invest in Indian industries such as biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, and sustainability.

The discussions between Modi and Parmelin coincided with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. This pact aims to boost investment, trade, and employment between India and the EFTA countries, which include Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

Additionally, global and regional issues were on the agenda, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability, particularly in the context of the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
