IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has decided to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester flights starting August 31, 2026, due to extended airspace restrictions, lengthened flight durations, and escalating operational expenses. This decision reflects the broader challenges currently faced by the international aviation industry, such as geopolitical tensions, surging fuel prices, and route disruptions, all of which have contributed to the increased costs of managing long-haul flights.
As part of this strategic move, IndiGo will be returning one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. This fleet addition, made in early 2025, was initially aimed at bolstering the airline’s expansion into European markets in anticipation of receiving its own Airbus A350 aircraft. Despite this temporary suspension, IndiGo has assured that its other long-haul international routes will continue to operate as planned, unaffected by this change.
IndiGo’s venture into the European sector has seen significant customer interest, strengthening its foothold in crucial global markets. However, the financial viability of the Manchester route has been challenged by extended flight times due to airspace constraints, coupled with rising aviation turbine fuel costs and currency exchange rate fluctuations. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, described the decision as regrettable yet essential given the current operational landscape. He emphasized the positive customer feedback the service received and reiterated the airline’s commitment to resuming the route when conditions improve.
The airline also mentioned its intent to explore alternative methods to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways while progressing with its long-term international expansion plans. Passengers impacted by the suspension of the Mumbai-Manchester route will be notified in advance and offered solutions such as alternative travel options or refunds, where applicable.
