India is advancing its plans to procure five more S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, following Moscow’s submission of a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The final decision on this acquisition is anticipated from the Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent upon successful price negotiations and approval from the Finance Ministry. The initial contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is on track, with the last system expected for delivery by November 2026.
The potential addition of further S-400 systems is poised to bolster India’s air defense capabilities, particularly in the eastern sector adjoining China. The S-400 system’s efficacy was notably demonstrated during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, bolstering arguments for expanding India’s fleet of these advanced defense units.
In the meantime, India remains undecided on acquiring Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets, despite the Indian Air Force’s interest in the proposal. This interest comes in response to China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, prompting considerations for enhancing India’s aerial combat capabilities.
The planned acquisition of additional S-400 systems is expected to be a focal point in broader defense dialogues between India and Russia. These discussions gain further significance with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India for the BRICS summit in September.
