In a demonstration of the enduring ties between India and Qatar, Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, traveled to Doha to express India’s condolences following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit highlighted the deep-rooted relationship shared by the two nations.
While in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, conveying heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju praised the late Father Amir as a visionary leader who significantly contributed to Qatar’s development and played a pivotal role in bolstering the strategic partnership between India and Qatar. He noted that the Indian community in Qatar held the Father Amir in high regard, mourning his loss deeply and remembering his contributions with profound respect.
Prime Minister Modi had previously paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, acknowledging him as a true friend of India and recognizing his efforts in fostering closer bilateral ties. The Indian government underscored its respect by observing a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026, during which the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and all official entertainment activities were suspended.
