Thailand Introduces New Travel Tech, Revokes 60-Day Visa-Free Indian Entry

by admin477351

Thailand is set to implement new visa regulations, discontinuing the temporary 60-day visa-free entry program that had been available to travelers from various nations, including India. This shift represents a return to more stringent entry criteria and could influence the travel plans of Indian tourists to one of Asia’s favored holiday destinations.

Under the updated policies approved by Thai authorities, Indian passport holders will need either a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon arriving in Thailand or an e-Visa obtained prior to departure, as they will no longer qualify for the extended visa-free stay. The VoA permits a stay of up to 15 days per entry, a notable reduction from the previous 60-day period. For those looking to bypass airport queues, the option to apply online through Thailand’s official e-Visa platform remains available.

Industry analysts suggest that these changes might deter spontaneous travel and last-minute holiday bookings due to the added paperwork, application process, and associated visa fees. Nonetheless, Thailand is expected to maintain its appeal among Indian tourists, thanks to its affordability, well-connected flights, diverse tourist attractions, and renowned hospitality sector. The revised regulations are anticipated to particularly impact long-stay visitors, digital nomads, and travelers planning extended multi-city vacations. Travelers interested in longer and more flexible stays might consider other Southeast Asian destinations with simpler entry requirements.

The updated visa rules are slated to take effect 15 days following their publication in the Royal Gazette. Travelers entering Thailand before this implementation date will still be subject to the previous rules and may remain for the duration initially granted. The initial expansion of visa-free access in 2024 was part of Thailand’s strategy to rejuvenate its tourism industry and stimulate economic growth post-pandemic, which successfully increased visitor numbers and cemented Thailand as a top choice for leisure travel, family holidays, and special events.

Officials have attributed the decision to tighten entry regulations to concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and a need for enhanced immigration control. This new framework seeks to strike a balance between fostering tourism growth and ensuring effective border management and regulatory compliance. Prospective travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines to facilitate a smooth travel experience.
