US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced a significant four-day visit to India on Saturday, with the objective of enhancing strategic partnerships and broadening collaboration across various sectors such as trade, defense, energy, and technology. This visit is marked by planned bilateral discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Notably, Rubio’s visit coincides with the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which involves key discussions among foreign ministers from India, the United States, Japan, and Australia.
The agenda for these talks is anticipated to cover a wide range of critical topics, particularly focusing on Indo-Pacific security and defense cooperation. With rising concerns about China’s expanding influence in the region, discussions are expected to delve into areas like critical technologies, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and ensuring resilient supply chains. Economic matters will also be a focal point, especially in light of previous tensions stemming from President Donald Trump’s tariff policies on Indian exports. Energy security is set to be another crucial topic during this visit. The United States is keen on increasing its exports of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to India, even as dialogues continue regarding India’s procurement of discounted Russian oil. During his visit, Rubio’s itinerary includes stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. In Kolkata, he is scheduled to visit the Missionaries of Charity headquarters, an organization founded by Mother Teresa.
