The Indian government has summoned the global leadership of Meta for discussions centered on several compliance issues. Among the topics on the agenda is the temporary removal of a Facebook Reel posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as the handling of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on Instagram and the proposed introduction of a username feature on WhatsApp. This meeting, initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), underscores the government’s concerns regarding Meta’s adherence to India’s digital regulations.
A significant point of discussion will be the inadvertent removal of the Prime Minister’s official content, despite Meta’s sophisticated content moderation mechanisms. Although Meta reinstated the Reel on the same day and attributed the incident to an error, the government is expected to probe how such a mistake occurred. The video in question addressed the NEET-UG paper leak and proposed solutions such as fast-tracking judicial processes and imposing stricter penalties to curb exam paper leaks.
Additionally, the handling of CSAM-related content and advertisements on Instagram will be scrutinized, following the government’s recent directives for the removal of such materials. The authorities are particularly concerned about the effectiveness of Instagram’s processes in dealing with these sensitive issues. Furthermore, the proposed username feature on WhatsApp is a critical issue for the government, which fears it could exacerbate impersonation risks, phishing, identity theft, and online fraud. As a precaution, MeitY has requested WhatsApp to delay the feature’s rollout until thorough consultations are conducted.
The need for stricter compliance with India’s IT Rules will also be emphasized during the talks. The government is likely to stress the importance of Meta maintaining accountability, particularly concerning AI-generated content and matters that affect public order. These discussions represent a broader effort by the Indian authorities to ensure that global tech companies operate within the frameworks set by national regulations.
