India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. The match saw India successfully defend their title, extending their dominance in T20 internationals against their arch-rivals.
After opting to bat first, India set a formidable target of 211/6. A rapid start was provided by Abhishek Sharma, who smashed a quick half-century, propelling India to 81/2 in the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20Is. Although Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to slow India’s momentum during the middle overs, a late surge by Tilak Varma proved pivotal. Varma’s unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls, supported by a 62-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who contributed 27, ensured India crossed the 200-run mark.
Pakistan mounted a strong response, spearheaded by Hasan Nawaz’s unbeaten 96 off 51 balls. An 87-run partnership with Saim Ayub put significant pressure on the Indian team. However, India’s bowlers managed to regain control at a crucial juncture. Washington Sundar delivered a key 18th over that disrupted Pakistan’s rhythm, while Jasprit Bumrah tightened the screws further in the penultimate over.
Facing an uphill task, Pakistan required 33 runs from the final over. India’s Shivam Dube held his nerve and successfully defended the total, ensuring a 19-run victory for India. This triumph not only secured another Asian Games gold for India but also reinforced their stronghold over Pakistan in the T20 format.
