Travelers between East Delhi and South Delhi can soon expect a significant reduction in their commute time, as the long-awaited Barapullah Phase III elevated corridor is set to open on September 29. This new infrastructure is poised to cut travel times from around 35–40 minutes to approximately 15 minutes, offering a much-needed relief for daily commuters between Mayur Vihar, Noida, and key areas such as AIIMS.
This 3.5-kilometer stretch will connect Mayur Vihar Phase I directly with Sarai Kale Khan, integrating with the existing Barapullah corridor to provide a largely signal-free route. The corridor is designed with four lanes and includes a bridge over the Yamuna River, nine distribution loops, connecting ramps, and dedicated facilities for both cyclists and pedestrians, enhancing overall accessibility and safety.
Originally approved in 2014, the Barapullah Phase III project faced numerous setbacks, with construction only commencing in 2015. Delays arose from a combination of land acquisition hurdles, necessary clearances, construction challenges, and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors have also contributed to an increased project cost, climbing from an estimated ₹1,260 crore to about ₹1,635 crore.
Despite these challenges, major elements of the project, such as the construction of the Yamuna bridge and connecting ramps, have been completed. Final preparations are currently underway to ensure that everything is in place for the corridor’s opening to the public at the end of the month.
