Amid ongoing tensions with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to accept marginally higher gasoline prices, citing it as a necessary cost to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Speaking at a rally in New York, Trump suggested that paying “a tiny little bit more” for gasoline was a reasonable sacrifice. He further indicated he might consider declaring the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory if Iran is defeated.
Iran has dismissed Trump’s statements, maintaining control over the strategic waterway. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would continue its blockade until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed the reality of its defeat. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi added that Tehran has not yet decided to resume negotiations with the U.S., and that shipping through the strait would remain halted unless American conditions align with Iran’s demands.
The standoff has led to significant disruptions in tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for global oil and natural gas shipments. This uncertainty has driven crude prices upward, exerting additional pressure on fuel costs. The average price of gasoline in the U.S. has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, representing a 29% increase compared to the previous year. Brent crude prices are also experiencing a notable weekly rise.
Iran is also feeling the economic strain, with President Masoud Pezeshkian attributing rising inflation rates to the U.S. blockade, sanctions, and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. These measures have compounded the financial challenges within the country.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has threatened to impose further financial measures on Tehran, as efforts to negotiate a ceasefire remain at an impasse.
